What It’s Made Of: Wood
Qualities

Nature's Perfect Material.

Wood is alive. It grows, breathes, and adapts. It has carried humanity for millennia - in homes, in boats, in tools, in craft. And now, in bikes.

We chose wood not for novelty, but for performance. It absorbs vibration naturally, creating a smoother, more comfortable ride than metal or carbon. It's strong, lightweight, and renewable. It ages beautifully and withstands the elements - our frames are designed to endure all weather conditions.

Natural damping

Wood absorbs road vibration better than aluminum or steel, reducing fatigue on long rides.

Strength-to-weight ratio

Properly engineered wood rivals carbon fiber in strength while remaining repairable and sustainable.

Sustainability

Wood is a renewable resource. Every frame is made from responsibly sourced timber.

Character

No two frames are identical. Each piece of wood has its own grain, its own story.

Longevity

Unlike carbon, which can fail catastrophically, wood is durable, suitable for everyday use and can be repaired.

Uniqueness

A living material that connects you to nature in a way mass-produced frames never could.

Craftmanship

How we work

Every frame is hand-laminated in layers, pressed, shaped, and finished by craftspeople who understand the material. We combine traditional woodworking with modern engineering - CNC precision, CAD design, rigorous testing - to ensure every Esel frame meets the demands of serious riding. Wood isn't a compromise. It's a choice.

How It Looks: Design

  • Simplicity

We strip away what doesn't matter. No gimmicks. No trends. Just clean lines, honest materials, and thoughtful engineering. The result is a bike that feels timeless - because it is.

  • Human-Centered

We design for real bodies in real conditions. Geometry that fits riders of all sizes. Aesthetics that connect emotionally, not just visually.

  • Inspired by Architecture

Christoph, our founder, brings an architect's eye to every frame. His approach - structure, proportion, and purpose - translates naturally from buildings to bikes.

Every line, every angle, every detail serves the ride - and the rider.
Functional elegance

Thoughtful Design, Real-World Ride

A conversation between wood and function. It's our way of making a thoughtful, lasting design piece into something you can actually ride. Beautiful enough to admire, strong enough to use, and made to be ridden again and again.

Who Builds It: People
Founder

Why did we create Esel?

At 1.95m tall, Christoph couldn't find a bike that fit. As an architect with a good sense for material and design, he solved the problem himself - designing frames out of wood that absorbed vibration, and adapted to the rider. Christoph still leads the company today, ensuring every Esel is made for riders who want something real.

Network

Who is behind the Esel bikes?

Every frame passes through hands that know the material, understand the craft, and take pride in the details. Craftspeople, partners - people who care about what they build. Dealers who believe in our approach, businesses that choose Esel as part of their identity.

Community

Keep Growing

You as rider are part of our growing community that values wood, design and people. Whether you're commuting through the city, exploring gravel trails, or pushing limits on mountain terrain, you're part of a community who enjoy riding their nature as much as you.
